Plenary and KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
David Ropeik, Author and Consultant, Ropeik and Associates
“The Risk Perception Gap. Why we worry too much, or too little, and the risk of getting risk wrong.”
David Ropeik is an Instructor at Harvard University, author, and consultant on risk perception, risk communication, and risk management. He is author of How Risky Is It, Really? Why Our Fears Don’t Always Match The Facts (2010, McGraw Hill) and co-author of RISK, A Practical Guide for Deciding What’s Really Safe and What’s Really Dangerous in the World Around You, (2002, Houghton Mifflin). Mr. Ropeik was a television reporter for WCVB-TV in Boston from 1978 – 2000, where he specialized in reporting on environment and science issues. He twice won the DuPont-Columbia Award, often cited as the television equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, and seven regional EMMY awards. He was a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT 1994-95, and he is creator and director of the program “Improving Media Coverage of Risk”, a training program for journalists.
Jennifer Marlon, Associate Research Scientist, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies
“Climate Change in the American Mind”
Jennifer’s research focuses on public perceptions of climate change and natural hazards, such as hurricanes and heat waves. She is interested in how psychology, culture, politics, and geography interact to drive environmental perception and behavior. Dr. Marlon also studies the physical aspects of long-term (paleo) environmental changes – especially wildfires. She initiated the Global Charcoal Database, which now holds nearly 1000 sediment records of fire history from around the world. She uses paleo and modern fire data in conjunction with models to understand the relationships between wildfires, vegetation, climate, and people over a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Dr. Marlon holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Geography from the University of Oregon, and a B.S. from the University at Albany, State University of New York.
